Choir FAQs
Want to learn more about our choirs? Below are some frequently asked questions.
Who can join the Culture House Choirs?
Our Youth Choir is for middle school girls in grades 6-8, and our Community Choir is for women in high school and beyond!
Do I need experience to join? Do I have to read music?!
No! 🙂 If you are looking to grow as a singer, return to a favorite hobby, or just try something new, this is the place for you! We have people from all experience levels, from beginners to those who have been in choirs for years. We provide both sheet music and recordings for the songs for all different types of learners. If you’re not quite sure yet if this is the right fit, let’s chat! We love to schedule a time to meet with people who are interested in joining, get to know your voice, and answer any questions you may have prior to signing up. You can schedule a free 1-on-1 or hop in for a trial class!
Who leads the groups?
Jana Qiu is the principal director of both ensembles. She has degrees and experience in music & education and has been leading choirs for over 15 years! To read her bio, click here.
What is a typical rehearsal like? And the semester?
We begin rehearsal with some gentle warmups, getting our bodies and voices ready to sing! At the beginning of the semester, Jana will then introduce the pieces as we listen through. Once we’ve familiarized ourselves with the songs, we’ll start working on the basics, learning our parts and adding musicality. After a couple weeks, we’ll start the rehearsals by reviewing the songs we have memorized and continuing to work through the rest of the music. The final couple weeks are for polishing and adding the finishing touches before our Showcase performance at the end of the semester! One perk about the schedule is that it is only 12 weeks long and wraps up before the busyness of the holiday season in the fall and the end of the school year in the spring!
What makes the Culture House choirs unique?
Having spaces where girls and women can gather to sing together, to build friendships, and to create beauty through music is a precious gift and becoming increasingly rare in our communities. These choirs are spaces of connection and growth for people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences who all come together to encourage each other and sing. Not only are these choirs built on quality arts education practices and pedagogy and led by a university professor with a Masters degree in music, but they are designed to allow for close-knit relationships in a positive environment for people of all abilities and learning styles.
What if the choirs are out of our budget?
We totally understand! The Culture House offers scholarships and other promotional offers throughout the year to ensure that everyone has access to high-quality arts education. We will do our best to work with you to make sure that money is not a barrier; please reach out to info@culturehouseca.org for more information on these opportunities!
This all sounds great! When can I sign up?
Registration begins about a month before our fall and spring semesters. If you’d like to be added to our mailing list to be notified about choirs and other upcoming opportunities, please let us know at info@culturehouseca.org! You can also follow us @culturehouseca to stay up to date on what’s coming next!
