The Culture House Writing Club is a chance to explore the art of writing through a variety of quirky, thoughtful, and unique prompts. From poetry to prose, participants will have the opportunity to share their stories and receive feedback from professionals, peers, and special guests in a positive learning community. English teacher Dave Roylance facilitates this group with candor, humor, literary insights, and encouragement. Open to adults, the group accepts new members on a rolling basis. Who can join the Culture House Writing Club?
Our Writing Club is open to adults who are interested in writing about, discussing, and delving into all the beautiful and messy parts of our lives in an authentic and encouraging way.
Do I need experience to join? Do I have to share my own writing?!
No! 🙂 If you are looking to grow as a writer, return to a favorite hobby, express yourself, or just gain some tips and tricks, this is the place for you! We have people with varying interest levels and styles of writing. Some are into poetry, while others are working on short stories. From limericks to journeys into the dark night of the soul, all writing is welcome, but there is never any pressure to share. If you’re curious, let’s chat! We’re happy to find a time where you can simply sit in on a session and see if it’s a good fit for you!
Who leads the groups?
Dave Roylance is the one who facilitates the group. A retired English teacher who has a quote and insight for every moment, there is never a dull moment or a dull email from Dave! His teaching philosophy leans towards calling out the good and encouraging what’s working in a piece rather than pulling out the red pen, and he creates a welcoming environment for all who are ready to give writing a shot!
What is a typical meeting like?
Often, Dave will send out an optional prompt or idea to get the creative juices flowing a few weeks before the meeting. Participants often send copies of whatever they are working on (prompt or not) to each other or bring printed copies to each gathering. The group may begin with a little writing warmup to wake up the writing muscles, followed by sharing and discussion. Sometimes there are topics or themes, but the main guidance to any session is “just show up!”
What’s the goal?
Everyone has their own reasons for joining the group, but there are opportunities at the end of each semester to submit written works to The Culture House Art & Writing Gallery that is part of our Fall & Spring Showcases. It gives something to work towards and is a great opportunity to share your writing with the community!
Is there a cost to join the group?Â
To keep the lights on and cover operational costs, we ask that participants make an annual donation to The Culture House. Suggested amount is $75, but we never want cost to be a barrier in joining!
